Google News 09/16: California requires state colleges to provide abortions
Then some people get upset about it
In yet another California-related headline, state lawmakers have passed Senate Bill 24, also known as the College Student Right to Access Act, which mandates that public colleges provide medical abortion techniques as part of their health care services. It also establishes the College Student Health Center Sexual and Reproductive Health Preparation Fund, consisting of private donations that would pay for the necessary supplies and training.
Abortion as a woman’s right
Supporters see SB24 as a much-needed expansion of abortion care. Since the Roe vs Wade ruling of 1973, abortion has been deemed a Constitutionally-protected option for women. Now, beyond just insisting on its status as a woman’s right, pro-choice activists have moved on to making abortions safer and more accessible to those women who choose to undergo them.
Democratic Senator Connie Levya, who was the main sponsor of the bill, summarized this when she said:
“It’s about access. Just because you have a constitutional right, if you don’t have access to that constitutional right, then it’s really no right at all.”
