How to have conversations about microaggressions
An introduction to the Kim Constructive Conversation Model
Microaggressions are a complicated beast. On the one hand, they can be so quick and casual, so seemingly trivial in their appearance, that addressing them can seem heavy-handed, or even silly. On the other hand, they often reflect deep insensitivities which, if left unchecked, can perpetuate the disrespect and devaluing of people.
In the end, most of us will decide to respond to microaggressions. But an intimidating challenge stands in our way. The resulting conversation won’t be an easy one to have. How do we broach the issue in a way that’s non-threatening, good-hearted, and sensitive?
The blueprints for navigating these kinds of conversations are laid out by Dr. Anatasia Kim, who developed a model which bears her name. Let’s read about this model, which can help us to address microaggressions as they happen, and therefore continue the important conversations that will lead us to improved respect and humanity.
